Chunky Cherry Coffee

A Shopify store that says it out loud.

Chunky Cherry is an Amsterdam coffee brewery with a clear point of view: the coffee industry is broken, and they want to do it differently. Their new website puts that message front and centre, while making it easy to browse their blends, stock up on morning essentials and have the perfect cup delivered to your door.

Objective

A store with an opinion

Chunky Cherry doesn't want to look like every other specialty coffee shop. The brand speaks openly about exploitation and inequality in the coffee chain, and the website has to carry that message without getting in the way of buying coffee. Bold enough to stand out, simple enough to order a bag of beans in a few clicks.

Design

Large type, a strict grid and room to break it

Studio Aardig's design is brutalist and typographic: oversized headlines, a visible grid, thin rules and a single bold red. Elements step off the grid on purpose, and parallax adds depth as you scroll. My job was to build that pixel-perfect, and make it hold up on every screen size.

Shopify

A custom theme the team runs themselves

The store runs on a custom Shopify theme built from flexible sections. Coffee goods, coffee subscriptions, a business offering and the Daily Drip blog all live in one place, in English and Dutch. Product cards show flavour tags at a glance, and every coffee can be ordered by size, roast and grind. The team builds and changes pages in the Shopify editor without touching code.

Motion

Contour lines drawn in Canvas 2D

The flowing contour lines behind the headlines are drawn live with Canvas 2D. They move slowly and never repeat, which gives the pages a sense of life without heavy video files. The same approach draws the footer, where the Chunky Cherry logo is built from a grid of dots that flicker and shift. Lightweight effects that keep the store fast.

3D

Real coffee bags in 3D

The coffee bags were scanned with Polycam and brought to the browser with WebGL. They turn slowly in the product carousels and on every product page, so you see the real packaging from every side. That gives the store a tactile, physical feel that matches the craft behind the coffee.

The result

A coffee brand that's impossible to miss

Chunky Cherry now has a website that looks and sounds like the brand: loud where it matters and easy where it counts. Customers can find their blend, start a subscription and read the story behind it, all in one fast Shopify store.
