GEO for Shopify: How to Get Your Store Recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

GEO for Shopify: what to fix so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can read, trust and recommend your store. Product data, rendering, content.

TL;DR: GEO for Shopify means making your store easy for AI assistants to read, check and recommend. In practice that comes down to four things: complete product data, product info that is in the page HTML (not loaded later with JavaScript), the same brand details everywhere, and pages that answer buyer questions in plain sentences. There is no special AI markup. Google says the basis is normal SEO, and Shopify says AI traffic comes on top of search traffic, not instead of it.

Why GEO matters for Shopify brands now

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means making your brand and products easy for AI tools to find, understand and mention when a shopper asks them a question.

Shoppers already use these tools:

  • Alphabet reported in its Q2 2026 results that AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion users a month, and AI Mode more than 1 billion (The Motley Fool).
  • Shopify said AI-driven traffic and orders to its merchants tripled year over year in Q2 2026. About half of the visits that come from AI tools land directly on a product page (TechCrunch).
  • Google's AI Mode has been available in the Netherlands since October 2025 (NL Times).

In the same update, Shopify said search is still one of its largest sources of buyer traffic, and still growing. So GEO does not replace SEO. You need both.

How AI assistants choose which stores to recommend

Each assistant works a bit differently, but they all rely on three kinds of input:

  1. Product data they can check. Shopify names four signals for AI channels: complete product data, correct categories, up-to-date price and stock, and engagement such as clicks and conversions (Shopify).
  2. Pages they can crawl. ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's crawler OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). Google's AI features only use pages that are indexed and can be shown with a snippet (Google Search Central).
  3. What others say about you. Reviews, press, comparison articles and marketplace listings tell a model whether your brand is what you say it is.

If one of these is missing, you are unlikely to be recommended, however good your copy is.

What Google says about GEO

Google's documentation on AI features in Search, updated in July 2026, is clear:

  • Structured data is not required for AI search, and there is no special schema.org markup for it. Keep using structured data for rich results.
  • You don't need llms.txt files, "AI text files" or Markdown copies of your pages to appear in Google Search.
  • Mass-producing page variants to rank counts as spam.
  • For products, Google points to Merchant Center feeds and Business Profiles.

Research points the same way. The 2023 paper that introduced the term GEO, by researchers at Princeton and IIT Delhi (accepted at KDD 2024), found that visibility in AI answers could improve by up to 40%. It also found that what works differs per topic (arXiv). There is no single trick. The basics do the work.

The Shopify GEO checklist

Each row is something an AI system checks about your store.

Headless Shopify and AI crawlers: check your rendering

Headless means the site your customers see is a separate app, for example built with Next.js, that gets its products from Shopify. That gives you a lot of design freedom, but it also brings a risk for AI search.

Vercel analysed AI crawler traffic and found that none of the major AI crawlers run JavaScript. The ChatGPT and Claude crawlers do download JavaScript files, but they don't execute them. So anything that only appears after JavaScript runs in the browser is invisible to them (Vercel). The same analysis found that about a third of their requests hit 404 pages. Old URLs and missing sitemaps cost you too.

Whether a headless store works well for AI search depends on a few early choices:

  • Render products and content on the server (static generation, ISR or server components). Use JavaScript in the browser only for extras like wishlists and chat widgets.
  • Don't load prices, descriptions or FAQs after the page has loaded.
  • Build sitemaps from Shopify and your CMS, so a renamed product gets a redirect instead of a 404.

Orangefit is a headless Shopify store on Next.js with DatoCMS and Algolia, running in several markets. Recipes, blogs and guides sit next to the products, and all Core Web Vitals are green (1s LCP, 143ms INP, 0.02 CLS). Fast pages with the content in the HTML are what both Google and AI crawlers need.

On a native Shopify theme, the same check applies to apps that add content with JavaScript. Look at what is actually in the HTML.

How to write content that AI answers can use

AI answers are built from short passages. Pages that get quoted usually do these things:

  • Give the answer first. Start each section with one or two sentences that answer the heading. Add the detail after that.
  • One question per section. "Is this protein suitable for kids?" gets its own heading or FAQ entry, not a line hidden in a paragraph.
  • Use numbers and name your sources. In the GEO study, adding statistics, quotes and sources were among the changes that helped most.
  • Write from real experience. Google asks for content based on what you actually know. For a D2C brand that means where ingredients come from, size advice, care instructions and honest comparisons.
  • Write in your customer's language. Dutch and Belgian shoppers need real Dutch pages with local terms, not machine translation. Link the language versions with hreflang tags.

A good CMS makes this much easier. At The Laundry Story, editors build pages in DatoCMS from ready-made blocks. A custom plugin lets them link Shopify products, variants and collections straight into their content. The team publishes buying advice and how-tos without a developer, and that is what makes weekly content realistic.

Make sure AI knows who you are

AI models connect mentions of brands, products, people and places. If your brand appears with three spellings and two logos, those mentions are harder to connect.

  • Use one exact brand name everywhere. Add Organization schema with your logo, contact details and sameAs links to your social and review profiles.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile, KVK details, marketplace listings and review profiles consistent.
  • Get mentioned where models look: independent reviews, trade press, Dutch comparison sites and consumer tests. Orangefit, for example, is rated #1 by the Consumentenbond and has more than 5,400 Trustpilot reviews. That is the kind of outside proof AI assistants rely on.

Can Dutch and EU customers buy inside ChatGPT?

Not yet. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts send your products to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. Shopify and Google also built the Universal Commerce Protocol, a standard that lets AI agents check out on a shopper's behalf. But Shopify says buying through these channels is currently only available to US buyers (Shopify).

For a Dutch brand selling to NL, BE and DE, GEO pays off now through discovery and visits to your store, not through orders inside the chat. The preparation is the same either way. With clean product data and categories, you are ready when checkout inside AI tools opens to EU buyers.

How to measure GEO

  • Track AI referrals in your analytics (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com) and see which pages they land on. Expect a lot of product pages.
  • Check Search Console. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Performance report under the "Web" search type (Google Search Central).
  • Test a fixed set of prompts every month, such as "best vegan protein Netherlands" or "sustainable laundry detergent Amsterdam". Note whether your brand is mentioned, and how.
  • Check your product feed in Merchant Center for errors and disapproved products.

How we can help

We build and improve Shopify stores, native and headless, with SEO, speed and structured data in from the start. Every project starts with a conversation and ends in a written scope with a fixed price (how we work). So a GEO check or a rebuild doesn't turn into an open-ended retainer.

FAQ

What is GEO for Shopify?

GEO (generative engine optimisation) for Shopify means setting up your product data, content and brand details so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can find, understand and recommend your store.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Partly. Google says doing well in its AI features still comes down to SEO: pages that can be indexed, useful content and a sound technical setup. GEO puts extra focus on product data, access for AI crawlers, server rendering and giving the answer first.

Do I need an llms.txt file on my Shopify store?

Not for Google. Google says you don't need llms.txt or other AI-specific files to appear in its AI features. Spend your time on product data and rendering first.

Should I block GPTBot in robots.txt?

That is a business choice. GPTBot collects content to train OpenAI's models. OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot, so you keep showing up in ChatGPT search answers.

Can Dutch customers buy my products directly inside ChatGPT?

Not yet through Shopify's AI channels. Shopify says buying there is currently only available to US buyers. Dutch shoppers can still find your products in AI answers and click through to your store.

Is headless Shopify worse for AI search?

No, not by itself. A headless store that renders its products and content on the server, for example with Next.js static generation or server components, is fully readable. Problems start when key content only appears after JavaScript runs in the browser, because the major AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.
