Shopify iDEAL in 2026: Eligibility, Costs, Wero and Alternatives

Why iDEAL disappears from Shopify checkouts, what it costs per plan, what the switch to Wero means and how to keep iDEAL for Dutch shoppers.

TL;DR: Dutch shoppers expect to pay with iDEAL. Shopify iDEAL comes through Shopify Payments, and you only get it if your store passes Shopify's eligibility review. Since August 2025 that review has switched iDEAL off for many new and small stores. iDEAL is also being replaced by Wero, and the iDEAL name should be gone by the end of 2027. If iDEAL is missing from your checkout, you have two options: wait until you qualify, or add iDEAL through another payment provider such as Mollie. The second option means you pay Shopify's third-party transaction fee, so check what that costs on your plan.

Last checked: 29 September 2026. Payment rules change often. Always check your own Shopify admin.

Why iDEAL matters on a Dutch Shopify store

Most Dutch people pay online with iDEAL. According to Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor figures published by iDEAL, it handled 73% of Dutch online transactions in Q3 2023. That is about 1.3 billion transactions a year (iDEAL). Betaalvereniging Nederland says iDEAL and payment cards together cover roughly 85% of Dutch e-commerce payments (Betaalvereniging).

So if a Dutch shopper gets to your checkout and can't find iDEAL, there's a good chance they don't buy. This usually hits new stores at launch, exactly when every order counts.

How iDEAL works in Shopify Payments

With Shopify Payments, iDEAL | Wero is built in. You don't need an app or a separate contract. Once your Shopify Payments account is set up and your store is eligible, it shows up at checkout. According to Shopify's help centre:

  • It only works in euros for customers in the Netherlands. The Netherlands must be an active market in your store.
  • You can refund for up to 180 days. You don't get Shopify's processing fee back.
  • Customers can't file a chargeback (a card-style dispute through their bank). If there's a problem, they come to you.
  • An order can show as "Payment pending" for a short while until the bank confirms the payment.

Why iDEAL disappears from Shopify checkouts ("waarom geen iDEAL meer?")

In August 2025 Shopify made it harder to get iDEAL through Shopify Payments. Dutch trade press reported four conditions: at least 90 days on Shopify, at least 100 orders, a chargeback rate below 1%, and a paid plan instead of a trial (Ecommerce News). Merchants in the Shopify Community report that orders paid through other payment providers didn't count towards the 100. Currence, the company that runs iDEAL, said these conditions came from Shopify Payments, not from iDEAL.

Shopify's help page no longer lists those numbers. It now lists these requirements:

  1. Identity verification for Shopify Payments is complete.
  2. Your business looks trustworthy: a clear refund policy, accurate product descriptions, contact details that are easy to find, good financial standing, and no breaches of Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy.
  3. Your store is public, not password-protected.
  4. You have a published legal notice with your company name, address and contact details.
  5. Your store accepts euros and the Netherlands is an active market.

Shopify also checks eligibility automatically "on a regular basis". So a store can lose iDEAL after launch, and several merchants in the Community thread say that happened to them. Check your payment methods regularly, not only once at launch.

Shopify iDEAL kosten: what iDEAL costs on Shopify

Through Shopify Payments, iDEAL costs a small fixed amount per order, not a percentage. Shopify's own Dutch blog gives €0.29 per order as an example (Shopify NL). Shopify doesn't publish an official iDEAL rate, so check yours in the admin under Settings → Payments.

If you add iDEAL through another provider, you pay two things on every order: the provider's iDEAL fee, and Shopify's third-party transaction fee. Shopify charges that fee even when Shopify Payments is also switched on (Shopify help). The rates come from Shopify's Dutch pricing page:

Shopify planThird-party transaction feeShopify fee on a €60 order+ provider iDEAL fee (Mollie example: €0.32)Total per order (vs ~€0.29 via Shopify Payments)
Basic2%€1.20€0.32€1.52
Grow1%€0.60€0.32€0.92
Advanced0.6%€0.36€0.32€0.68
Plus0.2% (can be waived in some countries)€0.12€0.32€0.44

Example numbers only. The Mollie fee is the typical rate reported by ICT Magazine (September 2026). Check your own contract.

What this means: on Basic, iDEAL through another provider costs about five times more per order than through Shopify Payments. On Advanced and Plus the difference is small. There, a separate provider can be worth it simply because Shopify can't switch iDEAL off for you.

Whatever you choose, place a real test order with a Dutch address in euros before launch. If the address or currency is wrong, iDEAL won't show. That looks exactly like an eligibility problem, but it isn't one.

iDEAL wordt Wero: what changes for Shopify stores

iDEAL is being replaced by Wero, a European payment system run by the European Payments Initiative. Like iDEAL, Wero sends money straight from the shopper's bank account. The timeline so far:

  • 29 January – 31 March 2026: webshops had to swap the old iDEAL logo for the new iDEAL | Wero logo (iDEAL branding). Shopify Payments already shows "iDEAL | Wero". If your theme or headless site has payment logos hard-coded in the footer or on product pages, you need to replace those yourself.
  • During 2026: payments move to the Wero system step by step, under supervision of De Nederlandsche Bank (iDEAL). ICT Magazine reports that all Dutch banks should be connected by around October 2026.
  • End of 2027: every business that accepts iDEAL should have moved to Wero, after which the iDEAL name disappears (iDEAL).
  • From 2029 (a forecast, not a fact): an ING economist expects Wero to charge 0.3–0.7% per payment instead of a fixed fee. Wero hasn't confirmed this. It only says there will be a cap on fees, without saying how high (ICT Magazine). For a store with a lot of orders that could add up, so keep it in mind when you renew payment contracts.

If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify and the banks handle the switch. What's left for you: update logos and checkout text (for example "iDEAL becomes Wero, you pay the way you're used to"), and run your checkout tests again.

iDEAL on headless and multi-country Shopify stores

Does going headless change anything for iDEAL? No. In a headless setup, the website your customers see is built separately (for example in Next.js), but the checkout is still Shopify's. The same payment methods, rules and fees apply.

What you do need to get right is how your store handles countries. iDEAL | Wero only shows for Dutch addresses paying in euros. If you sell in several countries, you need:

  • The right local payment method per country. Belgian shoppers, for example, expect Bancontact, which Shopify Payments also offers (Shopify help).
  • Payment logos that change per country, so Dutch visitors see iDEAL | Wero and German visitors don't.
  • Country and currency settings that reliably send Dutch visitors to a checkout in euros.

On a headless site, the easiest place for those logos is your CMS. Orangefit, a headless Shopify store on Next.js and DatoCMS, sells in several countries and languages, and the content team publishes pages and campaigns without a developer. Per-country payment logos can be managed the same way.

Pre-launch checklist: don't launch a Dutch store without iDEAL

  1. Finish Shopify Payments identity verification well before launch.
  2. Publish a refund policy, a contact page and a legal notice (company name, address, KVK number).
  3. Take the store off password protection early, so the eligibility review can run.
  4. Add the Netherlands as an active market with euros.
  5. Check under Settings → Payments that iDEAL | Wero is actually switched on.
  6. If it isn't, add iDEAL through another payment provider and check what Shopify's transaction fee costs you on your plan.
  7. Place a real test order with a Dutch address, then refund it.
  8. Replace old iDEAL logos with the iDEAL | Wero logo in your theme, footer and emails.
  9. Set a monthly reminder to check your payment methods, because Shopify keeps reviewing.
  10. Write down how you handle disputes. There are no chargebacks, so customers will contact you directly.

FAQ

Why can't I activate iDEAL on Shopify? (Waarom geen iDEAL meer?) iDEAL through Shopify Payments depends on an eligibility review. You need completed identity verification, trustworthy business practices, a public store, a legal notice, and the Netherlands with euros as an active market. Since August 2025, merchants and trade press have also reported a minimum of 90 days, 100 orders, a chargeback rate below 1% and a paid plan. New stores often don't qualify at first.

What does iDEAL cost on Shopify? (Shopify iDEAL kosten) Through Shopify Payments it's a small fixed fee per order. Shopify's Dutch blog gives €0.29 as an example. Through another payment provider you pay that provider's fee plus Shopify's transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

Which payment methods does Shopify accept in the Netherlands? Shopify Payments accepts cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, plus local methods such as iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact and Klarna. Local methods depend on eligibility and the customer's country. You can add other methods through third-party providers.

Does iDEAL work on a headless Shopify store? Yes. A headless store still uses Shopify's checkout, so iDEAL works the same way, with the same rules and fees as on a regular Shopify theme.

When does iDEAL become Wero? Webshops switched to the "iDEAL | Wero" logo between 29 January and 31 March 2026. Payments move to Wero step by step during 2026. By the end of 2027 every business should have switched to Wero and the iDEAL name disappears.

Can customers file a chargeback on iDEAL | Wero payments? No. Shopify says chargebacks aren't possible for iDEAL | Wero. Refunds and disputes go through you, and you can refund for up to 180 days.
